SOUNDBITE, Lieutenant Colonel Andrus Merilo, Commander of the Baltic Battalion
‘Trident Juncture is NATO quick response forces exercise, where battalions from different countries practise cooperation between their units under the command of Spanish brigade.’
-------------------
‘Baltic Battalion is combined infantry battalion of the three Baltic states, which unifies units from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. To be more exact we have four manoeuvre units – two from Estonia, one from Latvia and one from Lithuania. In addition we have combined combat support element.’
------------------
‘At this moment we have around 900 soldiers here on the field. With the combat support element in nearby area we have around 1000 soldiers in total. There are around 250 vehicles of different purpose in the battalion.’
------------------
‘During last few days my units have been studying our area of operations for this exercise, our drivers are learning to manoeuvre on mountainous roads here with their tactical vehicles. And as you can see on this hill behind us our Spanish allies are learning evacuation of battalion vehicles in the case we will run to some technical problems.’
-------------------
‘Tomorrow is the official start of the exercise and during first ten days we will have many different cooperation exercises with our allies.’
