Deputy Commanding General for Europe and V Corps Commander

Lt. Gen. John Kolasheski

Lt. Gen. John S. Kolasheski assumed duties as the Commanding General of V Corps on 04 August 2020. He also serves as the Deputy Commanding General for Europe for U.S. Army Europe and Africa.

Prior to his arrival at Fort Knox, Kolasheski served as the Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, Kansas, from June of 2018 to August 2020.

Kolasheski’s previous command and staff assignments include Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, United States Army Forces Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Commandant, United States Army Armor School, Fort Benning, Georgia, from 2016-2017; Deputy Commanding General (Maneuver), 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas, from 2015-2016; Deputy Chief of Staff, Strategic Communications, International Security Assistance Force, NATO, later Deputy Chief of Staff, Strategic Communications, Resolute Support Mission, NATO, Kabul, Afghanistan, from 2014-2015; Executive Officer to the Commanding General, United States Army Forces Command; Senior Army Fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations with duty in New York City; Commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, and Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan, from 2009-2012; Commander, 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As a field grade officer, he was Special Assistant to the Commanding General United States Army Europe and 7th Army with duty in Heidelberg, Germany; Operations Officer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, from 2003-2005; Deputy Operations Officer, Army Forces Turkey and 1st Infantry Division, Wurzburg, Germany, and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Turkey, from 2002-2003; Executive Officer, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, with duty in Schweinfurt, Germany; Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Commander, Company D, later Commander, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, and Operation Desert Strike, Kuwait, from 1995-1997; and Tank/Mortar Platoon Leader/Company Executive Officer, 3rd Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Kolasheski commissioned as a armor officer and holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Bucknell University and master's degrees in Engineering Management and Interactive Simulations/Training Systems Design from the University of Central Florida. His military schooling includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, the Infantry and Field Artillery Officer Advanced Courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College.

Lt. Gen. Kolasheski’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (5 awards), Bronze Star Medal (3 awards), Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge, and Basic Parachutist Badge.
