About Arctic Shock

Arctic Shock is a combined U.S. and Norwegian exercise supporting the National Arctic Strategy that enhances multi-combatant command relationships, airborne interoperability, and Arctic capabilities.

The exercise takes place from March 18 to 22, 2024, in Bardufoss, Norway, with around 150 U.S. Soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division and around 100 soldiers from the Norwegian Armed Forces participating.

The exercise consists of an over-the-pole movement from Alaska to Norway, an airborne jump, and a field training exercise focused on cold-weather capabilities demonstrating the U.S. commitment to defend the High North.

407th Soldiers Ruck the Marsjmerket Challenge
353d Civil Affairs Command
May 15, 2021 | 1:49
U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from the 407th Civil Affairs Battalion take part in a Norwegian Army physical fitness challenge the Marsjmerket. The Soldiers carry 25 pounds of equipment for 30 kilometers with the objective of finishing the march in under 4 hours and 30 minutes. Those who meet the standards will earn the Marsjmerket badge.

While the challenge is intended to test the mettle of each participant, Chaplain (Capt.) Nicolas Kmoch says the event is meant to be a spiritual journey, giving the Soldiers the chance to reflect on themselves while pushing themselves to their physical limit.
