The “Nuts and Bolts” of Impact Testing at Carderock
Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division
Jan. 2, 2025 | 2:29
In today’s interview, we sit down with J.D. Houchens, a Mechanical Engineer for the Underwater Explosion Research and Development branch here at Carderock. J.D. and his team are conducting lightweight impact testing in the B-Bay Annex of Building 19, within the Structural Mechanics Lab. This critical testing allows them to analyze and verify the strength of different fasteners and bolted connections under various load types and conditions.
By conducting these tests, J.D. and his team help determine the best materials and structural solutions to ensure the integrity of ships, improving their resilience and performance in underwater environments. (U. S. Navy video by Devin Pisner)
