U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition

Teams from across U.S. Army Europe and Africa will meet at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, to compete for the title of Best Squad, July 31 - August 9, 2024.

The event tests the squad’s effectiveness, communication, and overall cohesion, as well as the individual Soldiers’ technical and tactical proficiency, endurance, and fortitude.

This competitive training event exercises a full range of Squad-Level Skills; highlighting professional excellence and knowledge to determine the command’s top teams.

Winners of this competition will advance to represent U.S. Army Europe and Africa at the Army Best Squad Competition.

One noncommissioned officer and one junior Soldier will be selected out of the final winning squad to be named the Army’s Best NCO and Best Soldier of the Year, respectively.

91 Students in Officer Candidate School, Class 03-25, at Officer Training Command Newport, participate in their graduation ceremony at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Rear Admiral Darryl L. Walker, United States Navy, President of The U.S. Naval War College, serves as guest speaker for this event. Rear Admiral Darryl "D-Day" Walker enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1985 as an Air Traffic Controller. He received his commission in the United States Navy through the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1992. He is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the United States Naval War College. D-Day fulfilled various operational tours in the Pacific and Arabian Gulf, include service as the Commander and Executive Officer of the “Cougars” VAQ-139, deployed onboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), as well as the Commodore and Deputy Commodore of the Electronic Attack Wing United States Pacific Fleet, flying the EA-18G Growler. He has amassed an impressive 3900 flight hours and 696 carrier-arrested landings throughout his career. Walker’s shore assignments include Deputy Director, PERS-43; NAE Diversity Director; Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group; Chief of Staff to the Chief Information Officer, Secretary of Defense; Executive Assistant to the 11th Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Executive Assistant to the 32nd Chief of Naval Operations. As a Flag Officer, Walker served as the Deputy Director of Operations (J-3), U.S. Cyber Command, and most recently as the Deputy Commander of Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber (Navy), United States TENTH Fleet. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation, Navy Commendation Medal, USAF Commendation Medal, and various unit and campaign awards. Officer Training Command Newport develops civilians and fleet Sailors into newly commissioned officers morally, mentally, and physically while also instilling them with the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment for service in the fleet as Naval officers.
