A U.S. Army military policeman directs vehicle traffic on a pontoon bridge across the Rhine River at Nierstein, Germany, March 24, 1945. Soldiers with 249th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1137th Engineer Group, assembled the bridge in 18 hours on the evening of March 22 so General George Patton could cross the river before Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.
