21st Theater Sustainment Command
July 16, 2017 | 2:03
M.K. Air Base, Romania --Army Medicine Europe conducted Exercise Maroon Surge 17 June 26 through July 22, to assess its ability to operate as a Medical Theater Enabling Command in support of U.S. Army Europe's Exercise Saber Guardian 17. In addition to providing support to U.S. Army medical assets participating in Saber Guardian, Maroon Surge measured RHCE’s ability to expand its medical capabilities at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in support of a surge of casualties brought on by an exercise conflict. The tiered expansion plan involves the integration of both medical and administrative personnel into LRMC operations.
Maroon Surge’s culminating event evaluated the medical evacuation process and involved the reception of exercise casualties from a Saber Guardian Mass Casualty Exercise in Romania. On July 16, enabling a true test of Army Medicine assets, from the point of injury to stabilization and treatment at LRMC. Fifteen exercise casualties were transported to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, via an United States Air Force C-130 provided by the 86th Airlift Wing. Casualties were loaded on buses and transported to LRMC for triage and treatment of injuries that were deemed too severe to be treated at the exercise Combat Support Hospitals participating in Saber Guardian.
