USS Roosevelt (DDG-80) is taking part in the 75th anniversary of D-Day operations. The Roosevelt crew was surprised when they were diverted to Normandy while headed home from participation in exercise Formidable Shield 2019. Roosevelt Sailors join more than 1,300 U.S. service members, partnered with 950 troops from across Europe and Canada, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy. This is the first ship named in honor of both Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States and First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Currently home-ported at Naval Station Mayport the Roosevelt was operating in U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
