George Farragut
George Farragut (1755 – 1817) Jordi Farragut Mesquida, anglicized as George Farragut, was born September 29, 1755, in Ciutadella, Menorca, the Kingdom of Great Britain, which is now Spain. He joined his new country at the beginning of the American Revolution, initially as a lieutenant in the South Carolina Navy, and anglicized his first name to George. Farragut fought the British at Savannah and was captured in the Siege of Charleston in 1780, where Farragut's left arm was broken by a cannonball. After being released in a prisoner exchange, he fought as a volunteer at the Battle of Cowpens and at Wilmington. After the war Farragut settled in New Orleans, where one of his sons, David Farragut, would grow up to become Admiral David Farragut, famous for saying "Damn the torpedoes ... full speed ahead,” during the Civil War’s Battle of Mobile Bay. George Farragut would spend his final years in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where he died of Yellow Fever on June 4, 1817.
