Gretchen Hintz-Wronka shows the remains and possessions of her father, 1st Lt. Loren Hintz, to the great grandchildren of Loren Hintz in Florence, Italy, Nov. 15, 2019. A World War II pilot, Hintz crashed April 21, 1945 near Bologna, Italy while on a mission protecting Army Air Force bombers. Hintz's initial partially recovered remains were buried at an American Cemetery in Florence more than 70 years ago, however in recent years his family undertook efforts to locate his crash site and recover the rest of his remains. His son, Martin Hintz, daughter, Gretchen Hintz-Wronka, and grandson, Hans Wronka, played key roles in the discovery of Hintz's crash site and remains. Hintz is survived by two children, many grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His full remains are now buried in the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial.
