Fire Prevention Week 2020

Shout out: “Serve up Fire Safety in the kitchen!”

Narration:
That was the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which was held on U.S. Army Garrison Japan installations October 5th through the 9th to increase the community’s awareness of fire safety.

Cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries—particularly leaving cooking food unattended in the kitchen. We have had on our installations a few cases of fires caused by unattended cooking, but thankfully there were all minor cases.

Narration:
During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters and inspectors from the USAG Japan Directorate of Emergency Services conducted fire evacuation drills at numerous facilities. DES personnel explained the importance of knowing the locations of fire extinguishers in your home, school or office; as well as knowing the evacuation route and the proper procedures to take. They also set up fire safety booths at the Camp Zama Exchange and the Sagamihara Family Housing Area commissary.
Elsewhere, DES personnel conducted a fire extinguisher drill with Soldiers at the 901th Military Police Detachment.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are staying in and more meals are being cooked at home. That trend will continue through the end of the year due to seasonal events like Thanksgiving and Christmas. So please remember to remain physically in your kitchen while cooking. There are more tips, like not adding water to hot oil, but if there is one you need to remember, it’s to not leave the kitchen while cooking.

In a world where paratroopers fall from the sky, one platoon is flipping the script. Forget parachutes. This time, they're learning to fly a little differently.

Led by Chief Andrew Topits, a UAS instructor with 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment (Airborne) , who’s leading the charge—one rotor at a time—throughout the year at Grafenwoehr Training Area. His mission? To make sure Sky Soldiers across every rank know how to operate Unmanned Aerial Systems, or UAS. Yes, that’s Army-speak for “drones.”

“The experience so far has been fantastic,” said Chief Topits, visibly pleased that his students are flying drones. “This has been our second course. Everyone is coming out here and crushing it thanks to our aptitude assessment that we’re running beforehand—making sure these new operators have the skills necessary to operate these systems.”

Unlike off-the-shelf hobby drones, the paratroopers aren’t simply handed a controller and told to “send it.” Instead, they’re building their own aircraft from the ground up. Wires, soldering, and screws.

“All of these drones, the students have built themselves. They put a lot of care and effort into building them,” Topits explained. “They take pride in their work. They’re not just out here flying them going crazy just to have a good time. They’re out here to get work done.”

That “work” includes everything from reconnaissance to supporting live-fire exercises—essential skills in a modern battlefield where eyes in the sky can mean the difference between success and failure.

Still, seeing paratroopers hunched over circuit boards instead of parachutes is a sight that takes some getting used to. As the Army continues to modernize its formations, initiatives like this ensure that the 173rd Airborne Brigade remains on the cutting edge—proof that even the most seasoned jumpers can learn a few new tricks.

Soldiers conducted a live fire of first-person view drones for the first time at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Feb. 17-20, 2025. Although drones have been incorporated into training for years, this event combined FPV drones with live munitions in a series of live fire flights, all within range safety standards. The success is a result of collaboration between U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, 7th Army Training Command, Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

A homemade simulator, a high-altitude balloon, and a new task organization came together last week in Chimera Sunrise, a virtual sensor-to-shooter exercise that pushed the boundaries of multi-domain operations inside the 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force (2MDTF), 56th Artillery Command’s Innovation Lab.
