U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Aug. 16, 2012 | 6:44
Following the Flood of 2011, the Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needed to address known and potential damages to federal and non-federal levees in the PL 84-99 program throughout the Missouri River Basin. To help engineers to understand what the conditions were in the soils beneath levees and proposed setback levee alignments, the district launched an aggressive geotechnical investigations process that would provide a wealth of data. This information would be used to design any additional features needed to ensure the proper performance of the levee and to provide the authorized level of flood risk reduction to the levee system. Dick Taylor, the Deputy Chief of Engineering for the Omaha District, explains how the investigations are conducted and what information they yield.
