An M1A1 Abrams tank with Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, loads onto a Landing Craft Air Cushioned hovercraft to retrograde back to the USS Iwo Jima from Kuwait Naval Base, August 6, 2012, after completing an extensive series of training events to sustain their warfighting skills while deployed, Many of the Marines were ashore for approximately two months at Camp Buehring, Kuwait where they conducted a variety of live fire ranges, demolitions training flight operations and maintenance on vehicles that was unable to be conducted at sea while aboard ship. The 24th MEU is deployed with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group as a theater reserve force for U.S. Central Command and is providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
