GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico, December 29, 2017 – Alberto Puente-Rolón, professor at the University Of Puerto Rico (UPR), and Sergeant Angel Atienza from the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources (DRNA), training debris operation personnel on how to properly avoid and minimize impacts to endangered boas during post-hurricane debris operations.

Puerto Rican and Virgin Islands boas are under threat of extinction and receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. This law prohibits take, harm, and harassment of these species and mandates that steps be taken to prevent/minimize adverse impacts to the species and their habitat.

The guidance explains the proper methods for avoiding impacts, and handling/relocating boas and has been conditionally approved by the United States Fish & Wildlife Service. Please note that under normal circumstances, individuals are not authorized to handle or relocate endangered species. Andrea Bajandas/FEMA
