“There are nearly 1,500 tough, strong women serving in the MIARNG, a number that has grown over the last couple of years, but few of the facilities that guard members use have been updated to serve women in uniform,” said Gov. Whitmer. “Earlier this year, in my fourth balanced, bipartisan state budget, we included $100 million to modernize our state’s armories to better serve the women who serve our state. The Grand Ledge Armory is the first of 33 facilities statewide that will be upgraded with new facilities to ensure women in uniform have the same basic facilities their male counterparts have and can stay focused on their mission. I will work with anyone to support the brave service members of Michigan’s National Guard. They keep us safe at home and oceans away and we must have their backs.”

“I’m excited that we’ve reached this significant milestone of completing the first modernization project and I’m looking forward to monitoring our progress at the Grayling Army Airfield Armory and getting underway at seven additional locations this year,” said Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers, adjutant general and director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. “As more women join the MIARNG, these new facilities are vital to make sure our troops feel supported and have the resources necessary to thrive and be mission-ready.”

Maj. Gen. Rogers and Gov. Whitmer highlighted the work that is being done to modernize MIARNG facilities to better serve Michigan’s women soldiers including the addition of new shower and toilet facilities and lactation rooms.

The ceremony comes shortly after Gov. Whitmer signed into law the State of Michigan’s fiscal year 2023 budget, which authorized $100 million in funds ($50 million state/$50 million federal) to modernize current facilities used by the MIARNG to address inequities that exist in the facilities provided to Michigan’s women service members. Of the 33 facilities targeted for modernization with this investment, Grayling Army Airfield Armory is slated to be completed next while construction will commence shortly at seven additional facilities this calendar year: Albion Armory, Gladstone Armory, Ishpeming Armory, Kalamazoo Armory, Port Huron Armory, Traverse City Armory and Washtenaw Armory.

In a world where paratroopers fall from the sky, one platoon is flipping the script. Forget parachutes. This time, they're learning to fly a little differently.

Led by Chief Andrew Topits, a UAS instructor with 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment (Airborne) , who’s leading the charge—one rotor at a time—throughout the year at Grafenwoehr Training Area. His mission? To make sure Sky Soldiers across every rank know how to operate Unmanned Aerial Systems, or UAS. Yes, that’s Army-speak for “drones.”

“The experience so far has been fantastic,” said Chief Topits, visibly pleased that his students are flying drones. “This has been our second course. Everyone is coming out here and crushing it thanks to our aptitude assessment that we’re running beforehand—making sure these new operators have the skills necessary to operate these systems.”

Unlike off-the-shelf hobby drones, the paratroopers aren’t simply handed a controller and told to “send it.” Instead, they’re building their own aircraft from the ground up. Wires, soldering, and screws.

“All of these drones, the students have built themselves. They put a lot of care and effort into building them,” Topits explained. “They take pride in their work. They’re not just out here flying them going crazy just to have a good time. They’re out here to get work done.”

That “work” includes everything from reconnaissance to supporting live-fire exercises—essential skills in a modern battlefield where eyes in the sky can mean the difference between success and failure.

Still, seeing paratroopers hunched over circuit boards instead of parachutes is a sight that takes some getting used to. As the Army continues to modernize its formations, initiatives like this ensure that the 173rd Airborne Brigade remains on the cutting edge—proof that even the most seasoned jumpers can learn a few new tricks.

Soldiers live fire FPV drones in Germany

Soldiers conducted a live fire of first-person view drones for the first time at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, Feb. 17-20, 2025. Although drones have been incorporated into training for years, this event combined FPV drones with live munitions in a series of live fire flights, all within range safety standards. The success is a result of collaboration between U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, 7th Army Training Command, Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
