About DEFENDER 24

DEFENDER 24 is scheduled to occur from 28 March to 31 May. It is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations.

The exercise is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender 24 exercise, DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, and is comprised of three sub-exercises: Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response.

DEFENDER 24 is focused on the strategic deployment of continental, U.S.-based forces, employment of U.S. Army prepositioned stocks, and interoperability with Allies and partners at exercise locations across 13 European countries. It seeks to deter adversaries, transform operational mission command, build readiness, and strengthen the NATO Alliance.

U.S. Army and Czech soldiers train together leading up to the Culminating Training Event of Exercise Immediate Response 24, a sub-exercise of DEFENDER 24, in Město Libavá, Czech Republic, May 4-17, 2024. This exercise was a combined effort of the Active, Guard and Reserve components alongside NATO allies with the goal to deter adversaries, transform operational mission command and ensure overall readiness to rapidly respond to any crisis.

DEFENDER 24 is the Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May.
