DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Soldiers, assigned to 2nd Cavalry Regiment, 41st Field Artillery Brigade and 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, take an Expert Physical Fitness Assessment (EPFA) as a part of the V Corps Best Squad Competition at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, May 8, 2024. The EPFA consists of, per person: a one-mile run, 30 hand-release pushups, a 100-meter sprint, lifting a 40 lb. sandbag 16 times, a 50-meter water can carry, a 25-meter high crawl, a 25-meter three to five second rush, and concludes with an additional one-mile run.
