DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Marines with the maritime raid force, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Republic of Korea Marines conduct close quarter tactics training during exercise Ssang Yong 24, on Pohang, South Korea, Aug. 22, 2024. The purpose of the training was for the U.S. and ROK Marines to sharpen their proficiency on room and hallway clearing. Exercise SY24 strengthens the Republic of Korea-U.S. Alliance through bilateral, joint training, contributing toward combined amphibious capability in defense of the Korean Peninsula.
