DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Marines with Battalion Landing Team 1/1, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, provide sniper coverage aboard the amphibious docking ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) during a visit, board, search, seizure exercise off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 7, 2024. Marines with the scout sniper platoon were tasked with providing observation and overwatch for the Maritime Raid Force during the VBSS training. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the USS America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
