DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Marines with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1) and Navy sailors with Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School Pacific and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35, conduct Exercise OBSIDIAN ICEBERG at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California, July 31 to Aug. 1, 2023. OBSIDIAN ICEBERG is an Expeditionary Advanced Base Operation (EABO) exercise designed to develop and validate tactics, techniques, and procedures to effectively conduct customizable nodal EABOs that include rearming and refueling the F-35B Lightning II and the MV-22 Osprey during amphibious operations.
