DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Marines with Headquarters & Service Company, Marine Barracks Washington, remove the tarp after annual parade deck maintenance at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., on March 19, 2025. The removal of the tarp symbolizes the beginning of parade season, allowing the Marine Barracks Washington Parade Staff to execute the rest of battalion drill practice. Maintenance Marines maintain the historic parade deck year-round to ensure the grass is suitable for battalion drill practice and the upcoming parade season. The tarp helps protect the parade deck during the colder winter months.
