DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

Brazilian Army jungle school instructors assigned to 2nd Jungle Infantry Battalion (2º Batalhão de Infantaria de Selva) provide instruction on jungle survival, movement and patrol to U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Belem, Brazil, Nov. 3, 2023. 101st Airborne Division Soldiers learned jungle survival skills in preparation for a field training exercise in the Amazon Jungle during Southern Vanguard 24, an annual bilateral exercise which rotates between partner nations in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility, and is designed to enhance partner interoperability between the U.S. and partner nation forces.
