Mortar Teams conduct a live fire exercise at Red Cloud Range using 60, 81, and 120mm mortars during the 2024 International Best Mortar Competition at Fort Moore, Ga., April 11. 2024. The International Best Mortar Competition, April 6-11, consists of teams across U.S. forces and partner nations vying for the title of Best Mortar Crew. Only those qualified in an indirect fire (mortar) military occupational specialty or those with additional skill identifiers may compete. Mortars have the most power and range of any weapon in an infantry unit. Indirect Fire Soldiers are members of a mortar squad, section, or platoon. They carry out scout missions to spot enemy troops, gun locations, and operate two-way radios and signal equipment to relay battle orders. The Best Mortar Competition highlights the capabilities of mortar crews and gives spectators an inside-look at combat tactics. (Video by Toygar Ayla)
