Charles Fosse, commander, Coast Guard 13th District and Master Chief Petty Officer Shane Carroll, command master chief, Coast Guard 13th District, honor Petty Officer 1st Class Douglas Munro, during a memorial ceremony in Cle Elum, Washington, Sept. 27, 2023. Munro, who died while heroically evacuating U.S. Marines during the Battle of Guadalcanal on Sept. 27, 1942, is the only Coast Guardsman to have received the Medal of Honor, the highest military award in the United States military.
