DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Air Force and Army service members, along with Department of Defense civilians share reasons why they serve their country at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Aug. 20, 2024. Shaw AFB supported Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III’s social media campaign encouraging service members to share their reasons for joining their respective branches and the benefits of being a member of the armed services. Participants were encouraged to share their stories online with the #WhyIServe hashtag to increase awareness for the motivations for serving.
