DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners

U.S. Army Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, distribute fuel, supply and humanitarian assistance to the affected communities in the wake of Hurricane Helene in Mitchell County, North Carolina, Oct. 9, 2024. As part of our homeland defense mission, the Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command and in support of Federal Emergency Management Agency, provides necessary support to civilian authorities in the wake of any natural disasters when directed and approved by the Secretary of Defense.
