Press Release - U.S., Georgia, Türkiye Begin Black Sea Exercise

July 14, 2025

WIESBADEN, Germany —

U.S., Georgia, Türkiye and other allied and partner nations' militaries will meet to build combat readiness and increase lethality through a series of combined events that include an airborne operation, field training, and live-fire exercises in Türkiye and Georgia.

Over 2,800 personnel from ten nations, including over 800 U.S. service members, will take part in exercise Agile Spirit 25 from July 21-August 8, 2025. This year’s iteration includes forces from Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine.

Exercise series Agile Spirit, now in its twelfth iteration, is designed to enhance readiness, interoperability, and combined operational capabilities among participating armed forces.

The biennial exercise focuses on building capacity and increasing European leadership in European security through realistic, joint training scenarios. The exercise will begin with a joint airborne operation on July 21 near Adana, Türkiye, where approximately 340 paratroopers from the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade will jump alongside 100 Turkish Army paratroopers. Following the airborne assault, U.S. forces will move to Georgia to participate in a series of training events including live-fire exercises.

German and Romanian Army personnel will provide support to the higher headquarters element, while Bulgarian and Moldovan soldiers will participate in field training exercises alongside Georgian troops. Notably, the U.S. Georgia Army National Guard will co-lead the Georgian portion of the exercise alongside their Georgian Army counterparts, leveraging a decades-long State Partnership Program.

"During Agile Spirit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade stands ready to work alongside our Allies and Partners with purpose. We are ready, empowered, and disciplined," said Col. Mark. E. Bush, 173rd Airborne Brigade Commander. "As the flexible, interoperable force of choice, our paratroopers are prepared to deploy into uncertainty, outthink and outfight our adversaries, and return home with honor. We must be ready to accomplish the mission and whatever comes next."

The exercise will also include a command post exercise with the combined Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade, and Special Operations Forces activities. Agile Spirit 25 underscores the U.S. commitment to security and stability in the Black Sea region and highlights the importance of strong alliances and partnerships in addressing shared security challenges.
