Press Release - Security Assistance Group – Ukraine Change of Command

WIESBADEN, Germany —

WIESBADEN, Germany – U.S. Army Europe and Africa welcomed the new Security Assistance Group – Ukraine (SAG-U) commander, Lt. Gen. Curtis A. Buzzard at Lucius D. Clay Kaserne, Germany, August 5, 2024.

Lt. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto relinquished command of SAG-U during a change of command ceremony presided over by Gen. Darryl A. Williams, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commander.

Aguto commanded SAG-U beginning December 09, 2022. SAG-U is a dedicated headquarters established in 2022 to provide long-term, focused organizational structure to coordinate and oversee the full-spectrum of security assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“It has been an absolute honor to lead this team to support Ukrainian sovereignty and strengthen their efforts to fight back against Putin’s unprovoked aggression,” said Aguto. “Together we have faced unprecedented challenges, and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished in partnership with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters. We strengthened an international coalition that not only provided critical support but has also forged bonds of trust and solidarity that will endure. I am confident that the unwavering commitment of this team will continue to empower Ukraine in its pursuit of freedom and security.”

Over his 32 years of service, Buzzard served in numerous command and staff assignments in maneuver formations to include multiple combat deployments. When last assigned to Europe, he commanded the Joint Multinational Readiness Center where he conducted readiness building exercises for U.S. forces with NATO Allies and Partners. Buzzard most recently served as the Commanding General for the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore, Georgia.

“As I assume responsibility for Security Assistance Group – Ukraine, I am deeply honored by the trust vested in me to lead this critical mission,” said Buzzard. “We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Allies and Partners to support Ukraine. Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure that the Ukrainian military has the tools and training necessary to defend its country.”

SAG-U is comprised of joint and multinational service members including personnel from more than 25 nations in the collocated International Donor Coordination Center. The IDCC coordinates resources from among the international community to enable donor countries from around the world to provide military equipment, training, and aid to Ukraine.
