YAVORIV, Ukraine —

Exercise Rapid Trident 20 is an annual U.S. Army Europe multinational training exercise taking place at the International Peacekeeping Security Centre near Yavoriv, Ukraine, Sept. 16-25.

The purpose of the exercise is to enhance readiness and build interoperability through a brigade-level computer-assisted exercise with platoon-level maneuver training. The exercise also combines a brigade-level field training exercise with security and stability operations.

Approximately 4,100 service members from nine allied and partner nations will participate in the exercise, including approximately 160 U.S. Soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard’s 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, serving at Joint Multinational Training Group – Ukraine (JMTG-U) since July 2020. Participation also includes an estimated 15 U.S. military and civilian personnel from the U.S. Army Reserves, U.S. Army Europe, 7th Army Training Command, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and U.S. Special Operations Command Europe.

RT20 was re-scheduled to take place in September after it was modified in size, scope and scenario due to COVID-19. RT20 will be executed to the fullest extent possible while preserving the health and safety of all forces.

RT20 continues more than 25 years of partnership between the U.S. and Ukraine.

Through efforts such as RT20 and JMTG-U, the U.S. Army supports ongoing training efforts and enhanced defensive capabilities of Ukraine. RT20 is the final training phase, or culminating event, of an intense and realistic annual training exercise to prepare Ukrainian Land Force units for the challenges of real world situations and deployments.

RT20 is a Ukrainian-hosted, U.S. Army Europe-exercise designed to enhance joint interoperability among allied and partner nations, to demonstrate units are poised and ready to respond to any crisis.
