Press Release: Air defense artillery brigade headquarters to deploy to Europe

May 27, 2020

ANSBACH, Germany —

The South Carolina Army National Guard’s 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade headquarters will mobilize and deploy to Europe in June in support of U.S. Army Europe.

The 678th ADA Brigade is the fourth ADA brigade headquarters to deploy to Europe and will replace the 164th ADA brigade headquarters from the Florida Army National Guard that has been in Germany since June of 2019.

The 678th ADA will deploy with its equipment to Germany and serve under the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command as the mission command element for active duty air defense units throughout Europe. The unit will conduct multinational training events with allied and partner militaries and support real-world missions as needed.

"The rotational ADA brigade headquarters is critical to air and missile defense operations and European security. By handling the essential business of mission command and integration with allied and partner forces at the tactical level, it allows other parts of the Army air defense enterprise in Europe to shape the air and missile defense environment at the operational level," said Col. Bruce Bredlow, deputy commanding officer, 10th AAMDC.

Health protection of the force is a top priority for the 10th AAMDC and as an extra precaution against the spread of coronavirus, 678th ADA Brigade personnel will be tested for coronavirus upon arrival and complete a 14-day quarantine period at U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach.

The deployment of ready, combat-credible U.S. forces in support of the European Deterrence Initiative is evidence of the strong and unremitting U.S. commitment to NATO and Europe. Through bilateral, joint and multinational training, the air defense mission command element builds readiness, increases interoperability and enhances the bond between ally and partner militaries.
