Arctic Forge

 

 

Arctic Forge is a biennial exercise designed to enhance cold-weather operational capabilities and strengthen U.S.-European Arctic partnerships. Conducted in Norway, Finland, and other Arctic regions, it focuses on cold-weather operations, airborne movement, and Arctic defense capabilities. The exercise demonstrates U.S. commitment to defending the High North and bolsters NATO Arctic cooperation.

Interview with Justin Bohannan, Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System program manager with the U.S. Forest Service, during MAFFS spring training at McClellan Air Tanker Base, California, April 23, 2026. As the MAFFS program manager, Bohannan manages administrative functions for the program and serves as the primary point of contact during MAFFS activations. At the request of the National Interagency Fire Center, U.S. Northern Command may deploy C-130 aircraft equipped with MAFFS to support wildland firefighting operations. U.S. Northern Command oversees military aerial operations in support of federal and state firefighting efforts.
