Press Release - Rapid Trident exercise in Ukraine

Sept. 16, 2021

WIESBADEN, Germany —

U.S. Army Europe and Africa will participate in exercise Rapid Trident 21 from Sept. 20 through Oct. 1 at the International Peacekeeping Security Centre near Yavoriv, Ukraine.

Rapid Trident 21 is a Ukrainian-led, U.S. Army Europe and Africa assisted annual exercise designed to enhance interoperability among allied and partner nations, to demonstrate units are poised and ready to respond to any crisis.

The purpose of the exercise is to train combat credible Army forces in Europe, enhance readiness and build interoperability through a brigade-level computer-assisted exercise with platoon-level maneuver training. The exercise also combines a brigade-level field training exercise with security and stability operations.

Approximately 6,000 service members from 12 allied and partner nations will participate in the exercise. U.S. participation involves the Washington Army National Guard 81st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, deployed in support of the Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine since April 2021. Additionally, some 150 other U.S. Army representatives will participate as mission enablers.

Rapid Trident 21 continues more than 25 years of partnership between the U.S. and Ukraine. Through efforts such as Rapid Trident 21 and the Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine, the U.S. Army supports ongoing training efforts and enhanced defensive capabilities of Ukraine. Rapid Trident 21 is the final training phase, or culminating event, of an intense and realistic annual training exercise to prepare Ukrainian Land Force units for the challenges of real world situations and deployments.

The exercise will integrate COVID-19 mitigation measures to protect participants and host nation communities.
